In tribute to avant-garde composer Edgard Varèse (1883-1965), this work for percussive devices and electronics presents a long posthumous march w/ dark orchestral colors and crepuscular percussion pulses. A quite mysterious funeral cortège in memory of a true sound-alchemist... (N.B. vinyl sections were made especially for this project, no external sound sources used.) — Original 1-track recording divided in 5 tracks for digital version release.

The 6 tracks of "Lemon juice & chloroform" contain the original soundtrack of the eponymous audiovisual work by Rosebruit + unreleased audio material recorded for the film — collapsing alternative drum/bass patterns, free funk-jazz, glitchy-psychedelism, distorted horns, noise/electronic, abstract break-beats… No external sound sources were used in these recordings.

Text: "Let us assume that there is a substantial difference between lemon juice and chloroform. That was to be expected and — need it be said that? — there is significant differences, among other things, between think tank and myself. There's reason to believe that chloroform and lemon juice are as necessary as coma for extrasensory perception. In a manner of speaking: breathing a so called toxic substance, such as chloroform, could increase — by combination of circumstances — creative activities in order to gradually create new physical and intellectual abilities such as ubiquity and prophecy. Consequently: a thirst-quenching liquid like lemon juice and an anesthetic like chloroform are not only different products but also the prerequisite to metaphysical introitus."

Franck Smith runs the private recording collection Odiolorgnette and works as an independant artist in electronic fields, experimental audiovisual contexts and soundtrack production… Member of the dual electronic unit Zn'shñ and co-founder of audiovisual production Rosebruit… On his Odiolorgnette collection Franck Smith publishes a catalog of hybrid recordings from personal studies on Pygmy polyphony, cartoon/video-game music to Butoh dance and Noh theater soundtracking via pure experimentation, noise and radical electronic… With Zn'shñ he recently played in Japan for a series of concerts in Tokyo around the cd release "Butoh sweets (Adventures in dance, flour and colours)"… With Rosebruit he works on new performances involving experimental VJing, film making and electronic music… N.B.– both Zn'shñ and Rosebruit are collaborative projects with visual artist and sound-activist Elvire Bastendorff.

Zn'shñ's new Grendel Drone Commander

With a total of 9 knobs, the Drone Commander offers two manually-tuned oscillators and two LFOs, plus an unusually colorful and nasty filter. LFO1 is an analog variable-shape oscillator, and LFO2 is a pulse waveform that auto-synchronizes to LFO1 at a ratio of 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x. Both LFOs can be routed to the filter for rhythmic patterns. A line-level output jack is provided for connection to amplifiers or effects. The Drone Commander is housed in a dark green military ammunition case with engraved aluminum control panel. The case is welded steel with an easily removable, rubber gasketed lid. There is almost no plastic in the drone commander! It measures 10″(w) x 7″(h) x 3.5″(d), and weighs about 6 lbs. The unit is powered by a 9V battery accessible through a slide-out drawer in the side, as well as a 9VDC adapter. Filter CV input (0-10V) and clock pulse output (+8V) are now standard features. OUT NOVEMBER 2009

Noise manufacturer Franck Smith will publish a new solo album, one year after his electro-acoustic tribute to Edgard Varèse(1). Produced between Zn'shñ's two first albums(2) and the recording session of a third disc(3), this new solo publication by Smith titled "Théorème de point fixe" (Fixed point theorem) is scheduled for November and will be released on Odiolorgnette.

Five months after its discographic debut in April 2009, the dual electronic unit Zn'shñ (multi-instrumentalist/composer Franck Smith and artist/sound-activist Elvire Bastendorff), publishes a second opus, simply titled "II".

Focusing on specific electronic works and "high-end" noise-manufacturing, the new CD contains high frequency trajectories and delicate glitchy micro pulses between Japanese gagaku, digital machinery and Morton Feldman's string quartet colours and was elaborated as a peculiar ceremony for desertic places. Directly following "++" and also published on French independant label Odiolorgnette, "II" displays a suite of radical sonic manipulations conceived for nocturnal ambient usings dedicated to inquisitive minds and sophisticated noise esthetes...
